Market Environment
US equities are edging up slightly in pre-market trading this Tuesday, extending Monday's move that saw the Nasdaq set a new record thanks to ongoing strength in tech stocks. Attention remains fixed on Wednesday's inflation data (PPI) and Thursday (CPI), which will be key for future rate decisions.
Bloomberg consensus expects a monthly increase of +0.3% for CPI and +2.9% year-over-year for August. An upside surprise could complicate rate cut expectations:
"A hotter CPI driven by stronger demand or tariff effects could complicate Fed discussions on rate cuts and would likely be negatively received by equity markets," warns D.A. Davidson.
For now, markets are pricing in an 88% chance of a 25 basis point cut at the Fed's September 17 meeting, with a minority betting on a 50-point cut, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Oppenheimer, however, notes that the Fed should avoid an aggressive stance.
On the bond front, yields continue to climb:
US 10-year: 4.06% (+1.7 bps)
US 2-year: 3.50% (+0.8 bps)
Today's Data:
NFIB Small Business Index: +0.5 point to 100.8
