Asian Session Summary: August 1, 2025
Japan – Nikkei 225 -0.67%
The Nikkei fell below 40,900 points, weighed down by renewed trade tensions after new tariffs imposed by the United States. The Japanese manufacturing sector remains under pressure, with a PMI at 48.9. The yen stays weak at 150.7, supporting exports but reflecting a loss of confidence in the currency.
China – Shanghai Composite -0.56%
Chinese stocks dropped after Caixin’s manufacturing PMI came in below expectations (49.5). The weakness of the offshore yuan, which fell below 7.21, adds further pressure. Uncertain outcomes in trade talks with the US dampen investor sentiment.
Hong Kong – Hang Seng -0.70%
The Hang Seng declined for the fourth straight session, hurt by a drop in tech shares amid low macroeconomic visibility. The index hit a two-week low as tariff fears reemerged.
India – Sensex +0.01%
The Sensex stabilized around 81,080 points, supported by resilient manufacturing activity (PMI at 59.1). India appears temporarily spared from trade tensions, keeping appetite for domestic stocks intact.
Session Overview
Asian markets sank into the red, dragged down by the latest round of US-imposed tariffs. The surprise contraction in China’s manufacturing sector added to an overall climate of caution. This Asian nervousness spread to Western markets, heightening uncertainty ahead of key US data releases.
