Market Environment
US markets continue their climb this Wednesday, buoyed by hopes of monetary easing. On Tuesday, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at record highs, following inflation figures deemed "manageable."
July inflation came in broadly in line with expectations, but the core CPI (excluding energy and food) unexpectedly accelerated year-on-year, posting its biggest increase in six months. Nonetheless, investors remain confident in a rate cut as soon as September, with a probability estimated at 96.2%.
"Ironically, despite the market rally, some aspects of the report were concerning, especially the acceleration in core CPI," commented Henry Allen (Deutsche Bank).
"Tariffs are starting to be reflected in prices, with a sharp increase in appliances and tires," added Paul Donovan (UBS).
Today's economic calendar is light, but several Fed members (Goolsbee, Bostic) are scheduled to speak. The July PPI (producer price inflation) will be released tomorrow morning before the open.
